AIA Australia issues Priority Protection (PDS Version 32, prepared 9 November 2025), a modular insurance suite that lets you structure cover inside or outside superannuation. Priority Protection groups its plans into Ordinary Plans (Life Cover Plan, Crisis Recovery Stand Alone Plan, Income Protection Plan, Business Expenses Plan) and Superannuation Plans (Superannuation Life Cover Plan, Superannuation Income Protection Plan) — letting you select the policy structure and tax treatment that suits your circumstances (PDS lines 95-99, 132-138).

Life Cover under AIA Priority Protection

AIA's Life Cover Plan pays a lump sum on death or terminal illness diagnosis (per the Plans Available section of the PDS, mirrored in web/data/aia_data.json plans_available.ordinary_plans). Stand-alone covers available under the Life Cover Plan include Life Cover, Accidental Death, Term Cover (5 or 10 years), TPD Stand Alone, Universal TPD Stand Alone, Accidental TPD Stand Alone, Crisis Recovery and Double Crisis Recovery (same source). Occupation classes A1 through E plus M, IC, NA

A1 covers professionals, executives and senior management earning more than $120,000 over the last 2 years in an office-based management role. A2 covers professionals/executives whose income is below $120,000 with a tertiary qualification related to their current office-based occupation. A3 covers science and IT professionals, including some engineering professionals who may not be solely office-bound. A4 covers white-collar clerical and administrative work outside warehouse, manufacturing or industrial environments. M covers select highly-qualified medical professionals requiring registration with a professional or government body (Doctor, Anaesthetist, Cardiologist) — explicitly excludes allied health such as chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists. B1, B2, C1, C2, D and E cover progressively heavier manual work; D includes semi-skilled workers and unqualified tradespersons performing heavy manual work (e.g., fencing contractors, plasterers, cleaners). Category E is unskilled extra-heavy manual workers (e.g., concreters, earthmoving workers, carpet layers) and is not available under Income Protection CORE. Life Cover: the AIA PDS records this as effectively unlimited for non-Home-Duties applicants ($2M ceiling for Home Duties applicants). TPD Any Occupation: $5M maximum across all AIA TPD policies. TPD Own Occupation: $3M maximum (lower ceiling reflects the broader own-occupation definition). Crisis Recovery (trauma): $2M Total Industry Cover limit (across all AIA policies and other insurers, per PDS line 3535). IP CORE pays 70% of pre-disability income for the first 24 months, then 60% (default), with optional Flat 70% and 5-Year Benefit Period variants per PDS Section 5.1 lines 4188-4287. Waiting periods of 14, 30, 60 or 90 days; benefit periods of 2 years, 5 years, to age 65 or to age 70. IP CORE is Indemnity-only (Agreed Value not available for new business). The legacy Income Protection and Income Protection Accident Only contracts closed to new business 1 October 2021 — these now operate only as replacements for existing customers (per AIA Adviser Guide).

Premium structures: Variable age-stepped, Variable, Optimum

Three premium options per PDS Section 11.2: Variable age-stepped premiums recalculate each year based on age (typical step-up); Variable premiums fix a rate for the policy term until the anniversary before age 65 or 70 (then convert to age-stepped); and Optimum premiums start as age-stepped and automatically convert to Variable when the age-stepped amount exceeds the original-age Variable amount (PDS lines 10721-10741). Optimum carries a premium loading from commencement until the anniversary before age 65 or expiry. What is AIA's terminal illness definition?

Per PDS Version 32 (9 November 2025) Section 2.1, terminal illness means the diagnosis of an illness which, in the reasonable opinion of an appropriate specialist Medical Practitioner, is likely to result in death within 24 months of the diagnosis regardless of any treatment that may be undertaken (PDS line 2016). The 24-month definition matches Zurich, OnePath, Acenda, NEOS, Encompass and Futura on our panel; the longer definition was preferred over the older 12-month wording common to some legacy products.

Does AIA still sell Income Protection?

AIA stopped writing the legacy Income Protection and Income Protection Accident Only contracts to new business from 1 October 2021. AIA still offers Income Protection CORE (Indemnity, open to new business). For existing customers, the legacy contracts can still be replaced under specified continuity rules. General Exclusions

•Intentional self-inflicted injury or suicide (13 months for Life Cover increases)
•Participation in criminal activity or resulting from incarceration
•Engaging in armed forces service (after cover commencement)
•Normal pregnancy, uncomplicated childbirth or miscarriage (Income Protection/Business Expenses)
•Pre-existing conditions (unless disclosed and accepted)

TPD Limitations

•Not payable if Terminal Illness claim in progress or paid
•Not payable if death occurs within 14 days of disabling injury/sickness

Income Protection Offsets

Your benefit may be reduced by income from:

•Sick pay from employer
•Income/profits from current or former business
•Social Security payments or government grants
•Workers compensation or motor vehicle claim payments
