Most TPD policies include 'specified injury' or 'TPD with no waiting period' provisions that pay the full TPD benefit immediately on diagnosis of certain catastrophic events, bypassing the standard 3–6 month waiting period. The list of qualifying events typically includes total and irreversible loss of use of two limbs, loss of sight in both eyes, paraplegia or quadriplegia, loss of speech, total loss of hearing in both ears, severe burns covering specific percentages of the body, loss of independent existence, and other specified catastrophic conditions. The list is defined in the PDS and varies by insurer. The advantage of these provisions is that you do not have to wait through the assessment period to access funds for urgent medical treatment, home modifications, or care costs — payment can be processed within weeks rather than months. The benefit amount is the same as the standard TPD sum insured (no different from a regular TPD claim, just faster). Some policies add a smaller 'partial' benefit for less severe catastrophic injuries — for example, loss of one limb might pay 25% of the sum insured. Check your PDS for the exact list of qualifying events, the required medical evidence, and whether the payment continues to count toward the policy's overall sum insured (so subsequent claims for additional events may not be payable).
